Detox Your Soul

Jesus said: “whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14)

‘Give me a drink!’ It was the middle of the day in the Samaritan town of Sychar and Jesus was speaking to a woman drawing water from a well. The woman was surprised given that she was Samaritan and Jesus was a Jew. Jews avoided going anywhere near Samaritans and would never drink from a Samaritan cup. Yet here was Jesus in Samaria asking to drink from her cup.

She replied, “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?”

Jesus replied, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

The woman was puzzled. So she quizzed Jesus about why he would offer water when, at the same time, he was asking her for some.

“Surely you’re not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock.”

Jesus didn’t answer her directly but continued. “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

That’s pretty special water. If you were selling a detox kit that could do what Jesus promised, you’d sell it by the truckload. But Jesus wasn’t offering ordinary H2O water. He was offering this woman a spiritual detox able to wash the toxin of sin from her and slake her spiritual thirst. The same thirst all people have because we’re all alienated from God.

The Bible tells us that this woman’s life had become toxic with sin and compromise, yet Jesus offered her special living water… the very same water that the prophet Jeremiah promised almost 600 years earlier that restores relationship with God and gives life forever and ever. This water is the Holy Spirit of God who will live in all those who come to Jesus.

Jesus didn’t condemn the woman. Instead he gave her hope. And Jesus is offering you the same water. Would you like a spiritual detox? Then come to Jesus. Pray to him and ask him to cleanse you completely and help you to live with Him forever.

Prayer: Dear God, please detox me from sin and help me to live with you forever.
